Our Just the Two of Us

Hello! I have been reading and following different threads since we got engaged in May, and thought it was time to share our wedding planning!

About Us:

We met in University, he is Scottish and I am from Hong Kong – we were in the same class and were put together for a group project! We didn’t exactly hit it off right away, but as the group project started to wrap up, we got closer and started texting each other. He asked me out on a date to the cinema and as they say, the rest is history!

The Proposal:

We love picnics in the summer and Greenwich is one of our favourite places as it’s so beautiful and quite close to where we live. On one of the most gorgeous day in May, we cycled to Waitrose, got some food and got to our usual spot for a nice picnic. We ate and as always, I had a nice long nap. Right after I woke up from my nap, J held my hand and started talking about how he loved being my travel buddy, even though I am so annoying and bossy, and said plenty of lovely things which is still a blur to me to this day...(I was holding a chocolate rice cake and putting it in my mouth as he spoke…completely oblivious about what was happening!) He then opened the box and popped the question! I said yes and then went on taking a million photos around Greenwich!

  • The Ring:

We started looking at engagement rings in January this year and I had my heart set on a sapphire ring. We went to Hatton Garden but didn’t see anything that I loved (that was within our budget!). We came across a very unusual black opal ring on Etsy in March and J managed to get a discount of £600, we met the seller in London at Ritz and fell in love with it straight away. It’s a 9.40ct black opal, in a serpentine style yellow gold mount set with approximately 3 ct of pave diamonds. I kept trying it on at home, until one day he said no more trying or no ring…! So it stayed in the box for a month or so before we became officially engaged.

  • The Wedding:

We decided to get married next April as it will be our 9 year anniversary. We knew straight away that we did not want to have a big wedding, having been to quite a few weddings with each other. We also did not want any guests at our wedding as neither of us enjoys being in the spotlight. We love traveling so getting married abroad was an obvious choice for us! We looked at Mexico and the Caribbean Islands and decided Barbados was for us! Neither of us has been to Barbados so we will be exploring something new together, we can fly to Barbados direct from London and of course, who can say no the sunshine and rum?

I am happy to spend less money on dress, outfits etc. But there’s one thing that I refuse to save – our photographer. I knew very early on that I would be willing to spend more on beautiful pictures. We found a few photographers and Gina’s photos stood out from the rest. We spoke to her on the phone, exchanged a few emails and paid the deposit! http://www.ginafrancescaonline.com/

We hired a wedding planner to help us with the logistics and legal papers. We could have done it ourselves but decided against it. I just want to be able to relax and enjoy the wedding and honeymoon without worrying about the little things! We want to get married on the beach and this wedding planner will provide transport, decorations, cake and champagne for the day. She is also Gina’s sister so I am confident that they will help us to have the best day possible, having worked with each other for so many weddings. Bianca specialises in elopements and here are some of her photos from Facebook.

Sounds amazing - my dream wedding! Would love to see a pic of that ring!

  • The Ring! I didn't take these as my own photos just don't do it any justice. I understand this is very unusual for an engagement ring but I really love it!

Opal is not as strong as diamonds so I won't be wearing my opal ring everyday. My mum gifted me a round diamond ring last Christmas and I will be using the stone for a new design, adding two sapphires to the sides, something like this:

Wow! I've never seen anything like your ring before, it almost looks magical! Even your "every day" ring is gorgeous! Love your plans so far. I also love Greenwich - we live in SE London so nice hearing of a local bride and engagement story! Barbados is beautiful, your photos and entire day will be amazing!

Thank you! We are very excited!!

  • The Dress:

I set a budget for myself, to me, it’s a dress that I’d only wear once so I did not want to spend over £1k. So I started going to the sample sales in London. I came across Riki Dalal’s Instagram account and found out that they were having a sample sale in August, I went in with little expectations as I knew their dresses were way above my budget. I decided to try on the very first dress that I liked and it was £3999 reduced to £499. It was a bespoke and I had never seen it anywhere on the website either! I tried it on and immediately fell in love with it, I did not want to take it off!! After an hour or so, I decided I would just bite the bullet and go for it. When I was handing over my credit card, the sales assistant asked me what my initial budget was, I told them £300 was my absolute max, so I cheekily asked if they could take £100 off, the lady went to ask the manager – and agreed to bring it down to £450. I left the shop with the biggest smile on my face (also the biggest box and bag ever!)

  • Ohhhh that sounds amazing! I love Riki Dalal's dresses!!

100% cant wait to see it!!

Ooh I work near Rikki Dalal and often swoon over some of the dresses in their window! What an absolute bargain you got! I bought a sample (not in the sale) and thought I’d done well getting some off but that’s amazing!!

  • Wow your ring is absolutely stunning!

I have a sapphire and diamond trilogy and absolutely adore it <3
