Sorrento is absolutly the easiest for getting around and sightseeing. I don't know about Sardinia, but we stayed in Sorrento in a hotel with gorgeous views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The ferry took us to Capri for a day trip and we could catch the train straight to Pompeii and tours to Vesuvius. We also hired a driver to take us along the Amalfi Coast one afternoon, we stopped in Positano and Amalfi while also taking in the stunning views.

Positano is very picturesque with winding cobbled streets and a beach. Amalfi is slightly bigger but still has a lot of character. Capri is tiny and very expensive, plus you need to get a ferry to get anywhere else. However previous posters have commented on how although they are lovely to stay in they aren't the best base for day trips. Sorrento is bigger with lots of restaurants but less character and no real beach. However you can get to so many places easily and has lovely hotels.
