Evening guest numbers

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but for evening guests numbers does it really matter if you tell your venue the wrong number? Ours is £6 or something a head for evening and this is just for the evening buffet but not everyone eats at the evening buffet anyway? Obviously we aren't going to lie on purpose but if an extra couple of people turned up it would easily go unnoticed?

I think you need to tell them for insurance purposes. We aren't catering for everyone for the evening, we are going to cater for 75% and venue fine with this

I think it's standard that you order food for a certain number, but not the actual number of people attending. We've asked friends whose weddings we've been to how much they catered for, and it's always far less than the number of people and there's always food left. We've got to have 70 in the evening (venue requirements), so we'll pay that, but there may be around 80-90 actually there.
