Honest opinions on my dress idea please...

Hi I'm new here and this is my very first post so please be kind  :-)

I've spent hours (possibly days) searching for the perfect dress. I have strong thoughts on what I want  but I'm having trouble finding it.

I really want a knee length 50s style dress with a big puffy skirt and a fitted top half with either short or 3/4 length sleeves.  And I only have a budget of about £100!!! Impossible right?

Well whilst searching, an idea dawned on me but I really need other opinions and I cant ask h2b for obvious reasons. I'm not sure if it's a great idea and I'll look fabulous or all this wedding searching has sent me crazy and I'll look ridiculous if I go through with it.

Anyway, I've found a white puffy tulle skirt on Amazon for £20. Its knee length and puffy and gets good reviews. I then searched and found a white corset style top with short chiffon sleeves for £12.

Does anyone think this will work? I'm really worried I'll look like I'm going to a costume party and it's really important I look like a bride.

Thoughts please?

  • I think separates would work but that top makes me think of a German beer maid! Sorry if it sounds harsh but I don't think it looks bridal at all.

I'd also stay away from anything that has costume in the title because if it's aimed at the fancy dress market it's usually very cheap material.

No I really appreciate your comment. To be honest I wasnt set on the top either. It looks cheap.
I love the skirt but think I'll keep looking for the perfect top xx
  • I'd worry about the satin-y material as well! But given it's Amazon - you could always order and try it on and then return it?
If you're looking for something budget friendly - I know Boohoo and Pretty Little Thing have quite a few white bodysuits which could work nicely!

I agree with the other ladies that the top isn't great. The skirt looks nice and separates could definitely work if you find the right top half.

Try having a look at Vivien of Holloway and Lindybop for 50s style dresses. I'm not sure how bridal they are but could be worth a look.
  • Also definitely look at ChiChi and Dorothy Perkins etc! They have a few dresses and you could buy a petticoat to wear underneath so that it has more volume at the bottom

I have actually looked at all those 3 dresses you've linked. I really love them all and am considering them (they are at the top of my list). The only thing that puts me off is I cant tell how much material is lining the skirt part of any of those dresses.  I actually messaged chi chi to ask them if there was enough fabric in the lining for me to wear a petticoat underneath but they didnt know what I was talking about 😆
Maybe I should buy them and see? I can always send them back.....xx

Thank you. I've tried both those websites and although their dresses are absolutely beautiful,  they arent quite bridal enough xx
  • Definitely order them and send back!! No harm done. And you can’t really know until you have them! Let us know how you get on x

If you could stretch your budget a little further Wed2Be have a tea length tulle design called Lola for £159. One of the pictures shows it will added sleeves.

If you like the Amazon skirt but need a top half and like the corset idea, I can recommend https://corsets-uk.com/collections/overbust-corsets

They do a selection in white from £79 - bit steep but the quality is amazing and if that skirt worked with them you'd be within budget (just). They have a couple with shoulder straps.
